On 16 June 1855 the Governor General granted Geelong's request for a general market. Market Square, already in use, became official.
Covering eight acres, Market Square mainly sold produce until 1900 when the town council began to allow other activities to take place on it. This paved the way for subsequent development that created the busting conglomeration of buildings that existing in 1938.
