Highlights from the PMAV AGM

This past Saturday, the PMAV (Prospectors and Miners Association of Victoria) held its Annual General Meeting in Dunolly, bringing together enthusiasts and advocates from across the goldfields region. The event featured an impressive lineup of speakers, including Jason Cornish, John Tully, Brent Shannon, Phil Rackham, Craig Roberts, and Dr. David Barton, each contributing valuable insights into the ongoing efforts to preserve and promote metal detecting in our historic landscapes.

One of the main topics discussed was the ongoing battle to save our forests for detecting. As the hobby of prospecting continues to grow, the preservation of these natural environments becomes increasingly crucial. The recent support from relevant councils for a World Heritage plan for the Central Goldfields signifies a promising step forward. Notably, a UK World Heritage expert praised the landscape of the Central Victorian Goldfields, describing it as the best-surviving example from the 19th-century gold rush. This acknowledgment highlights the importance of protecting these unique environments not just for current prospectors, but for future generations.

During the meeting, attendees enjoyed a provided lunch, which offered a great opportunity to mingle and reconnect with old friends and fellow enthusiasts. The sense of community was palpable, underscoring the shared passion for metal detecting and the heritage it represents.

The PMAV committee is doing an outstanding job advocating for the rights and interests of prospectors across Victoria. Their dedication and hard work deserve our full support as we collectively strive to ensure the continued access and protection of our precious detecting areas. As we move forward, let’s rally behind the PMAV, ensuring our voices are heard in the ongoing efforts to preserve these remarkable landscapes for future generations of prospectors.
