Tragic Discovery in Remote Queensland: Prospectors Found Deceased

The search for two missing prospectors in remote Queensland ended tragically when their bodies were discovered earlier last week. A 65-year-old man and a 69-year-old woman were reported missing last Monday after failing to return to their caravan in Croydon, a small town located 500 kilometres southwest of Cairns.

The experienced pair, who were regular visitors to the area, had left their caravan park on Sunday to prospect at Esmeralda Station. Known for their familiarity with the goldfields and the harsh summer conditions of far north Queensland, their disappearance sparked concern among friends and locals.

Their vehicle, a Toyota Hilux, was located on Monday at Esmeralda Station, but the search effort intensified after their personal items, including mobile phones, were found inside the unattended vehicle. Despite hopes for a positive outcome, the bodies were discovered by a helicopter crew last Wednesday afternoon.

Sergeant Winfried Weiss, the search and rescue coordinator, expressed his condolences, stating, “Police conducted an extensive land and air search over the remote area, which sadly resulted in locating the pair deceased.” A report will now be prepared for the coroner.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the prospecting community, with friends describing the male prospector as having "world-class" exploration experience.
