First Look: The NEW Minelab GPZ 8000 Metal Detector
Share
Last night, Minelab officially unveiled their newest flagship at the conference… and within minutes of the reveal, we had it in our hands.
There is a big difference between watching a launch on a screen and physically holding the machine. The photos never quite tell the full story. So here is a genuine first impression, purely from what we could see and feel.

First Impression: It Feels Right
The very first thing that stood out was balance.
Even though it is running a large coil, it did not feel front-heavy. It felt centred. Controlled. Comfortable in the hand. That is something you notice immediately when you lift a detector.
It does not have that dragging-forward sensation some larger-coil machines can give. It feels like something you could swing for a long session without fighting it.
The Coil: Unusual, But Purposeful
The coil is what everyone noticed straight away.
It has a donut-style shape, with an open centre. It is not what we are used to seeing. At first glance it looks different, almost bold. But the more you look at it, the more it makes sense.
It looks engineered, not decorative.
The open design gives it a lighter appearance while still offering serious ground coverage. Standing there holding it, you can immediately picture covering wide open country efficiently.
It looks like a coil built for serious ground.
Clean, Modern Layout
The control panel and screen look refined.
It does not look cluttered. The buttons are clearly placed. The screen is large and easy to read at a glance. Nothing about it feels overwhelming or overly complicated.
It looks modern. Updated. Like a true step forward rather than a small revision.
For many prospectors, especially those who have been swinging for decades, that simplicity is welcome.
Shaft Adjustment – A Noticeable Improvement
One small but very practical detail stood out.
Extending and shortening the shaft felt simple and quick. No fiddling. No screwing and unscrewing components. It just felt smooth and straightforward.
It is the kind of improvement you appreciate in the field when packing down or adjusting for different terrain.
Streamlined Profile
The battery area looks compact and tidy. Nothing bulky hanging off the side. The whole machine has a streamlined profile.
It feels balanced, refined and thoughtfully put together.
Even small details like the built-in light show that it has been designed with real-world use in mind. Early starts. Late finishes. Long days.
Overall Presence
Some detectors feel like hobby machines.
This one feels like a flagship.
When you stand it upright, it has presence. It looks premium. It looks serious. It looks like a machine designed for people who are committed to finding gold.
Last night’s reveal created a lot of interest, but holding it confirmed something important. This is not just a cosmetic update. It feels like a new chapter in high-end gold detection.
We are looking forward to seeing what it does in the ground.
More specifications to be revealed soon!
